Many people have different description for Goals.

So what are goals in terms of succeeding in life?

Most of the people in this world want money, they set goal to earn more money because they think money would solve all their problem. True, but some people have enough money for 2 generations but they still set goals. Their goals in life would be about health, children, family and many more other then money.

Whatever it may be, you need to have a goal in life. If you do not have a goal in life you are nothing but a dead meat or dead fish which is getting carried away in the water.

I have seen some type of people wake up every morning and they just live the life as it comes. Every man’s typical day is something like this

Wake up in the morning

Read newspaper or watch news channel

Get ready to office

Have breakfast

Go to office

Do the same repeated work with no change

Have a tea break

Continue with work

Have lunch

Continue the work

Come back home

Play with children

Spend time with family

Sleep

Now, everyone in this category sets a goal.

You set the alarm to get up at 6.00 AM, that is a goal you are setting to wake up at 6AM.

You set some time for getting ready to go to office, That is a time bound goal you are setting.

These things are short term goals in your life. If you split this short term goal into micro goals, see how it works.

You need to go to office at 9.00AM

You to need to leave your home at 8.00 AM to reach the office at 9.00AM

You need to have the breakfast at 7.45AM

You need to take bath at 7.00AM to have your breakfast at 7.45AM

You need to wake up at 6.45AM to take bath at 7.00AM

You need to sleep at 10.00PM to get up at 6.45AM

Now do you see how I have broken down the goal that I set to reach the office at 9.00AM

This is how you need to set the goals. You can break any goals in to many pieces to make it easy and to chart down the action plan. Once you do this you will feel that you can achieve that goal. You will have the sense of accomplishment before even achieving the goals. This will make you happier.

What if you set a goal to get promoted to the next level in your job? How can you break it down?

The same way that I showed you above. First set the goal in a SMART way as I have explained in my previous post. Then start breaking it down to pieces as shown above. Write your action plan to achieve each pieces of your long term Goals.

You will see that you are achieving the goals very soon.

Goals in life are essential. If you do not set goals to succeed in your life, you are planning to fail.

Your Goal should be SMART

S- Specific

Your Goal should be specific, Do not just set your goal merely, set it accurately, define and redefine your goal.

For example, Do not set your goal as I want to earn a lot of money, It does not mean anything, You need to say the exact amount that you want to earn.

I want to earn $150,000 this year. This is a specific goal. This way you can move further in achieving the goals. OR you can also set goals as below

I want to reduce 15 pounds within 2 months

I want to go to Australia on 25th December 2008

When you are more specific about your goals, it will be very easy for you to achieve.

M- Measurable

Your Goal should be measurable. This point is completely relevant with the point one. If you set a goal of earning $150,000.00 in one year, you can break it down to 6 months or 3 months or one month. You can also measure the progress. If you have only earned $5,000 in 1 month, you have a vision on how much more you need to earn to meet your target.

If you want to lose 10 pounds in 2 months, you can measure the progress every week.

So set a specific goal which is measurable at any point of time.

A – Achievable

Your goal should be achievable. I do not have more knowledge on Directing a movie, If I set my goal to become a director in 2 months, that is foolish. There is nothing wrong in setting the goal to become a Director but set the time which is achievable.

Set your goals Specific, measurable and achievable.

R – Realistic

Your goal should be realistic. You cannot set your goal to change yourself as a bird which is not possible. You cannot set your goal that you will fly without wings, You cannot set your goal to walk on the water. I guess you understand the point, You need to set your goals which is realistic, Which can happen in our life. The goal can be tougher, may require lots of energy, time and money, but may be realistic.

So set your goals that are realistic.

T – Time Bound

Your Goal should be Time Bound. Set a goal and set the time to complete or achieve the goal. If you do not set the time, it is highly possible that you will not achieve the goals. Whatever your goal may be set the time limit, this will push you to achieve the Goal, this will give you an idea of the progress.

So set the Goal that are SMART

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Achievable

R – Realistic

T – Time Bound
